As packaged or as prepared? Keep one state throughout

By SteadyScale editorial · Updated October 16, 2026

Look for more than one column

Some sources show a food on its own and an example prepared with another ingredient. The checked Rice Chex page, for example, separates the packaged cereal from cereal with skim milk. A clear food record states which column it uses rather than quietly selecting values from both.

Keep the full row set together

Once you choose the as-packaged state, use that state for the serving, calories and every nutrient in the record. Do not borrow a protein number from a prepared example because it looks more complete. If a comparison is about prepared foods instead, all compared items need a compatible preparation basis that is actually documented.

Your own bowl is another question

A manufacturer’s prepared example does not describe every bowl made at home. A different ingredient, amount or preparation can change what is represented. This website does not infer the composition of your own meal from a dry-food record. It also does not use your local weight entries to build a personal recipe or nutrition target.

When taking comparison notes, write the state next to the product version. That small habit makes it easier to notice when a search result, retailer panel or package photo describes something different from the source you first opened.

Follow the source trail

The food detail page puts its state and original serving near the top, with the checking date in the source box. If you find a version mismatch, use corrections to identify the page and current public source. A changed record triggers a review of linked analysis; it should not leave an old conclusion attached to new facts.
